Prolonged Retention of Laminaria Fragments, A Case of Unusual Complication of Laminaria Usage
Bai Byoung-Choo

Abstract
The laminaria tent has become increasingly popular as a reliable means of gradual dilatation and softening of the cervix prior to termination of early pregnancy. This method has been found to be relatively safe and is associated with few complications.

Inadequate dilatation may render evacuation of uterine cavity difficult, resulting in prolonged bleeding, cervical laceration and pelvic inflammatory diseases(PID), and prolonged retention of laminaria fragments is an unusual complication of laminaria usage.

After that, the patient complained dysmenorrhea, leucorrhea, irregular spotting and secondary infertility. The prolonged retained laminaria fragments were diagnosed by hysterosalpingography and ultrasonography. By the dilatation of the cervix, suction curettage, and forceps removal, approximately 2 large and 15 small fragments were completely evacuated. I described an unusual case of prolonged retained laminaria after a midtrimester abortion and made discussion involving some literatures.
